Sandals usually reign in this season, but that wasn’t the case for Spring 2013. While they weren’t completely absent, designers seemed more focused on pumps and spring cutout versions of boots, which also lead to the resurgence of gladiator sandal boots – easily the most talked about footwear trend of the season. Extreme style aside, designers includingBurberry Prorsum, Balmain and Gucci were still in consensus about classic single soles. Platform heights were once again only raised for wedges, a category that continues strong. Also carrying on, yellow, last spring’s color du jour, has progressed into shoes as a must-have shade along with silver.

The revival of the gladiator shows it is, without a doubt, fit for a warrior. The new runway versions utilized intricate looped straps, panels, hardware and buckles. Versace, Alexander Wang and Altuzzara crafted styles that were just about knee-height while Rick Owens chose mid-calf. Gladiators discovered modern territory when paired with Proenza Schouler’s boxy oversized vests or tailored looks with a lingerie edge as Versace demonstrated.

I was walking around town yesterday, to come across the Jimmy Choo Spring 2013 shoot on the Upper East Side. The model was wearing bright and colorful printed snakeskin shoes and bag, there was an extremely well dressed team, none of which really spoke English. I was just hanging out in my Converse, black silk tuxedo pants and Japanese style modern coat, watching the photographer and the model sync in their work. I did look like an Upper East Sider running errands; effortless chic. Not necessarily a blogger or stylist per se. More along the lines of a behind the scenes designer in all black; the side of me that enjoys creative work, rather than being worked on. On my mission to the Theory store, the other side of me was then complimented by a girl, probably an employee of Jimmy Choo, who adored my coat. We then exchanged brief comments on general fashion topics. I looked down at her shoes and to my surprise a more wild approach on her part. Sneakers similar to mine, but a lot more exciting. Obviously. Lo and behold, the Alouette sneakers:

I really love these with denim and a big chunky sweater. When styled right they can transition into any season.

Manolo Blahnik week Anyone?

Before the return of the classic pump, Manolo Blahnik’s shoes often felt a bit mature for the fashion market. While the ultra-hip among us were teetering around in six-inch platforms, Blahnik, who refuses to entertain such notions, was still selling pumps hand over fist to clients with more traditional taste and waiting for the pendulum to swing back his way. And swing it did.
Now that Manolos are hip again, Blahnik’s design team seems to be playing a little faster and looser with his design conventions to appeal to a more fashion-forward audience. Mixing prints had been trendy for a while, and anyone who’s tried it knows that finding two prints that clash in just the right way can be difficult. With pink leopard layered over a more subtle red and blue print (in velvet, no less), do the Manolo Blahnik Algona Velvet Ornamental Pumps make it work?

Strangely, perhaps, I think the print-on-print look works really nicely. From a distance, it looks like all one pattern, but up close, the differentiation becomes clear. I love a bit of an illusion, so that’s right up my alley. The crystals, on the other hand, give me a bit of pause. It’s a very Blahnik detail, of course, but I wish it were either more intricate or completely absent – go hard or go home. As it is, though, this is a simple pump that’s anything but simple. “The Brian Atwood Twinkle Chain-Fringe Booties are…”

Brian Atwood loves a three-dimension shoe. His most preferred methods of going above and beyond the normal dimensions of the foot are feathers and embroidery, but that doesn’t mean Atwood isn’t willing to experiment with all kinds of embellishment when it comes to designing a new pair of shoes. At first glance, I thought that the stuff hanging off of the Brian Atwood Twinkle Chain Fringe Booties was wispy little bits of feather. After reading the name, I zoomed in and realized my mistake – those are indeed tiny little chains hanging off of the shoe.
The way that the chains are applied makes them flare out from the body of the boot instead of having them lie flush against the suede, which is what contributes to Atwood’s signature flare. I’m just not entirely convinced that I’d want to wear them, though, which is why they’re the subject of this week’s Fill in the Blank. Adidas Cancels Controversial “Shackle” Shoes After Slavery Comparisons

 

Adidas announced Tuesday (Jun 19) that they will NOT be releasing their “JS Roundhouse Mid” sneakers after various critics pointed out that the shoes — which featured a pair of golden ankle shackles — reminded them of slavery.

The controversial sneakers, now infamously known as the “Shackle” or “Slavery” shoes, were designed by world renown artist Jeremy Scott, who is known for creating outrageously flamboyant and unique shoe designs for Adidas. Some of his previously released shoes have featured teddy bear heads, Mickey Mouse heads, wings and eccentric style/colors.

I love all the models walking in “Fang” shoes with ten sharp teeth to each foot. The shape of the wedge is so complex and I am ready to bet it will charm a lot of fashionistas!

Hadleigh’s – my new obsession

 

I like the mixture of linen and color. I think they will look really cute with Capri’s, or even my boyfriend jeans.

HOWEVER…
The Hadleigh slippers have a more fresh feel. They don’t look like “mom” shoes to me at all. They’re more sophisticated and fun than the Stubbs & Wooten.
