Ooh la la, Céline! What mouth-watering luxury, what unequivocal glamour! If the majority of women don't know the names of Céline's bags yet (as in the "Phantom" and "Cabas"), they will come fall. Better than most, Phoebe Philo comprehends the subtlety that must go into a bag's design for the result to be utterly, divinely stylish.
The classic flap bag, now in a pool-blue colored called "Box Lagoon," is as relevant now as it was upon initital release, if not more so. The chicest bags today aren't overloaded with hardware – they simply showcase their clean, expertly sketched lines and high-grade skin, with a strong and simple clasp taking front row. The "Clasp" shoulder bag, in a shade of bright red I could stare at for days, has a sharper shape and a more fluttery clasp, one that's tied with a pert knot.
When python is this large and luxe, you don't need anything else but an opulent flared shape, as seen on the "Cabas Phantom" tote. And when black has this much texture, it's as exciting as a bright. Philo understands we still love our bags with flair, and those of the "more is more" mentality will appreciate the "Luggage Phantom," stamped calfskin in an exaggerated shape – in your hands it will read like a wild flourish. As you may have guessed, no collection I deem stellar could be complete without some leopard; a traditional tote style is anything but with elongating zipper details.
Striking the lovely balance between mild and wild, classical and radical, Céline has etched a spot in the hearts of bag snobs everywhere.
